Pastor Charles Hunter Sr.

Pastor Charles Hunter Sr. is a man of deep faith, strong character, and lifelong service whose leadership has touched generations both inside and outside the church. At the heart of his life is his love for God, his family, and the people he has been called to serve. Pastor Charles has been married to his high school sweetheart, Beverly Hunter, for 50 years. Together, they have built a legacy rooted in faith, love, commitment, and family. They are the proud parents of one son and two daughters, and the joyful grandparents of five grandchildren who bring life, laughter, and purpose to their family. Whether gathered around the dinner table, enjoying family celebrations, or sharing fellowship with members of the church, Pastor Charles deeply values the relationships that keep families and communities strong.

For more than five decades, Pastor Charles has dedicated his life to serving others through education, ministry, mentorship, and community leadership. His extraordinary 52-year career with Portland Public Schools reflects his passion for investing in young people and helping shape future generations. Throughout his years in education, he became known not only as a leader, but as a mentor, encourager, and advocate for students and families throughout the community.

In addition to his work in education, Pastor Charles has served alongside the Portland Police Bureau for more than 40 years, where he currently serves as a sworn chaplain. In this role, he provides spiritual support, prayer, crisis counseling, and compassionate care to officers, their families, and members of the community during both challenging and celebratory moments.

His commitment to the community extends beyond the pulpit and public service. For over 40 years, Pastor Charles has been actively engaged in community advocacy, outreach, and leadership throughout Portland, consistently working to strengthen families, empower youth, and bring hope to underserved communities.

For 38 years, Pastor Charles has faithfully served as Senior Pastor of Neighborhood Church of God, leading with wisdom, integrity, compassion, and a heart for people. Under his leadership, the church has remained grounded in biblical truth, rich in family values, and committed to serving both the congregation and the surrounding community.

When reflecting on his life’s journey, Pastor Charles often says, “I believe God called me to ministry and prepared me for pastoral leadership.” That calling is evident in every area of his life. Whether as a pastor, educator, chaplain, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, or community leader, Pastor Charles continues to leave a powerful legacy of faith, service, and love that will impact generations to come.
